Paradoxical Intention, to Laugh at Yourself Therapy Pain

Pain is just as healthy. In a way, it’s the other side of the hospital healthy. Therefore, the hospital has the same position as well. Healthy and diseased conditions also influenced how we see both. Well, what if we look like we looked healthy sick? Come learn paradoxical intention!

Today any body can said weak. A few days in Bali towards Lumajang trips, overnight there immediately drove to Sidoarjo, continued to drive around a lot of purposes in Surabaya. Once complete resume business in Sidoarjo, the motor kicked from behind by a driver who did not see the shine comes from my right and grabbed the left from the right. Bounced and fell. Be complete ‘story’ that day.

That night the pain just started feel of a crash that ended with a handshake between two riders. The second night was the wrist and back pain, especially if bent. That’s why I move every bend, I always say “Wadauh”.

Because every time ducking always say “Wadauh”, then I try to purposely bent and deliberately say “Wadauh”. Pain is still felt, initially. After I did a few times, I was more concerned with the word “Wadauh” and the timing or time to say “Wadauh”.

When I was aware of a sense of magic and the word “Wadauh” in reaction, no cuteness relationship between them. That’s why I’m always smiling couples realize the word “Wadauh!” And pain. What is the effect? The pain so tasteless reduced.

How can it be like that huh? The effort is similar to healing a therapeutic method by Victor Frankl, an existential therapist, called paradoxical intention. I say similar, because it is not exactly the same. Paradoxical intention is usually used to cure the irrational reaction of the emotions experienced by the client. So what’s that look like?

Paradoxical intention is done by emphasizing emotion (uncomfortable) experienced by the client, so the client is aware that the reaction was caused by the irrational emotions. Thus, paradoxical intention actually reinforce the emotion, not eliminate it. Well, when the client realizes that his reaction is not rational, it is expected he will relieve himself of his emotions.

If the books I’ve ever read, the examples used are someone who sweats phobia. By a therapist, he was asked to calculate how much sweat that comes out every one minute (if not mistaken so). It shall the people are getting scared, because the required notice sweat. But the client was not concentration on fear, but on the amount of sweat. Anyone ever read about is not?

So remember, this way once I use when I’m holding a client with depression and hallucinations. This client is afraid of the creepy figure. I asked him to describe these figures. I’m telling her feelings. I asked him to designate which part that frightened him. After he pointed, I add the section streaks, so it looks funny. I did this repeatedly until it really felt that they were funny. I wish there was some humor attached to the figure that he feared.
That glimpse of the therapy myself with laughing at the pain, or in this case is paradoxical intention. This method can created with different techniques, but still using the same principles, as examples vary in this paper.

Are you interested to try? How the technique would you do?
